Grounded in the practice of Safety Release Technique (SRT) her creative framework uses the floor as an essential partner for play.

Gabrielle began her professional dance career in Columbia, SC. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Dance Education with a minor in Spanish at Columbia College on both dance scholarship and the SC Teaching Fellowship. She has also received a Masters in Education in Divergent Learning at Columbia College. Students will be asked to create some of their own compositions, and perform with and for others in the class. Students will be exposed to many different styles of jazz dance throughout the course of this class, which will allow students to be able to create their own stylized combinations.

Kinder Ballet (4 year-olds)
Classes will blend the concepts of ballet with creative movement using both classical and popular age appropriate music to learn basic skills and engage in dramatic play. In a structured environment children will begin to recognize their own individuality and body mobility. Classes will foster a love of movement from learning basic ballet steps, translating music to movement, exploring how bodies can move in space and using imagery and props in creatively choreographed dance games. Through dance-play students will explore dance technique, practice large and fine motor movement skills and develop a great variety of  movement qualities as we work toward acquiring a lifelong love of dance.

Kinder Ballet is for 4 year olds.
Wednesday

Kinder Ballet (K-1)
Ballet technique will be gently introduced through exercises, dance games and student leadership opportunities as we continue to foster a love of dance. Dancers will learn new movement patterns, explore qualities of nonverbal expression, and organize movement into an aesthetic experience. We will continue using imagery and props to broaden and develop students’ artistry. Throughout the year students will learn and practice the Royal Academy of Ballet technique at the preprimary level. Classes will explore and expand movement possibilities and skills.

Students who took Ms. Sara’s Wed 3:45 Kinder Ballet class in 2019-2020; students entering kindergarten who took Laura or Mauri’s Creative Movement in 2019-2020; and new 1st Grade students interested in ballet should take this class.

Contemporary/Ballet Mix
Incorporating elements of classical ballet and modern dance, the influences of the class primarily stem from Limón and Cunningham technique. The structure of the class develops strength, flexibility, fluidity, and musicality. This class promotes an in-depth understanding of alignment, spatial awareness, movement efficiency, and injury prevention. The class teaches classical ballet positions and how those shapes are exaggerated and altered through contemporary forms. Head/tail connection and spinal articulation will be integrated into more traditional foot and leg exercises. Center work will investigate fall and recovery with spatially controlled movements. Then traveling across the floor exercises will be followed by challenging phrase work. Throughout the school year, dancers will learn ballet and contemporary dance history and be offered the opportunity to choreograph short dances during various holiday classes.

Contemporary/ Ballet Mix is for 7th-12th Grade dancers. Students should be expected to have a mature attitude and apply themselves diligently in class.

Creative Movement Ensemble
Students in Creative Movement Ensemble (CME) will learn about dance as an artform through a thematic approach to movement (space, time & energy). Students will be included in Halestone’s fall concert in our studio space, and an emphasis will be placed on collaboratively choreographing as a class. Students will be guided to create a dance piece as an ensemble. They will be empowered to use their newfound knowledge of space, time and energy to create their own choreography and to work in groups to create the dance piece.

Creative Movement Ensemble is open to dancers in kindergarten through 4th grade. Creative Movement Ensemble is a new experiment to meet certain needs! It’s a pilot program for us. Pending grant funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, transportation will be provided from Natural Bridge Elementary School and Waddell Elementary School to the studio space for CME. Students from other elementary schools are welcome to register for CME, however transportation must be provided by families for those students. Students will receive a snack and a supervised short social time together at the studio prior to class, time permitting. Students will be expected to participate in Halestone’s fall concert in our studio space.

Because CME has an emphasis on performing, 3rd and 4th grade dancers enrolling in CME are encouraged to take an additional class per week – either ballet, modern, tap or jazz to work on the development of their technique. Older CME students will be empowered to be mentors to younger CME students.
