Jazz III A&B
Jazz III is a traditional high energy jazz class. Dancers will review the foundations of jazz technique, while developing their own character and style. Class starts in the center for a warm up and conditioning, moves across the floor, and ends with a combination. Students will be asked to create some of their own compositions, and perform with and for others in the class. Students will be exposed to many different styles of jazz dance throughout the course of this class, which will allow students to be able to create their own stylized combinations.

Jazz III is for 7th-12th Grade dancers. While fun-filled and welcoming, students are expected to have some prior dance experience.

Natural Bridge Elementary: Creative Movement Ensemble TUES
Students in Creative Movement Ensemble (CME) will learn about dance as an artform through a thematic approach to movement (space, time & energy). An emphasis will be placed on collaboratively choreographing as a class. Students will be guided to create a dance piece as an ensemble. They will be empowered to use their newfound knowledge of space, time and energy to create their own choreography and to work in groups to create the dance piece. Older CME students will be empowered to be mentors to younger CME students.

Creative Movement Ensemble is open to dancers in kindergarten through 4th grade. Creative Movement Ensemble is also a new experiment to meet certain needs! Halestone received grant funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts to offer transportation to our studio for this class.

Creative Movement Ensemble on TUESDAY will have roundtrip transportation offered from Natural Bridge Elementary to Halestone. Pickup is in front of Natural Bridge Elementary between 4:45 and 5:00 pm.
For the 2nd 9-week session this class is capped at 7 students. We will reevaluate this enrollment cap in February 2020. Students from any elementary school can also register for this class, however they must arrange their own transportation to Halestone.

Modern I & II
Creative, fun-filled, and challenging, this class is formatted to help students build a solid technical base in modern dance and improvisation. The focus on technique is supported by a focus on developing proper alignment, strength, flexibility, coordination, and musicality. Improvisational skills are nurtured using scores and dancers are given agency in choreography. Dancers will learn modern dance history and start to understand the many influences on the form (ballet, African dance, Graham, Cunningham, contact improv, etc.) Dancers also learn about the dynamics of energy (yielding, pushing, reaching, grasping, and pulling) that are the support and motivation for all movement. Creativity is encouraged in dancers on every level.

Modern II is for 4th through 6th Grade dancers. 7th-8th Grade dancers are also welcome to take Modern II.

Tap II
Tap II will review tap fundamentals and will build on from there. Classes will begin in the center with a warm- up, then go across the floor working on specific steps. Students will focus on building a skill-set through learning steps of increasing difficulty. Students will be encouraged to develop their own style through the techniques they will learn and will be able to let loose and have fun through improvisation structures.

Tap II is for 4th-6th Grade dancers (or the equivalent). (3rd Grade dancers who took either Ms. Susie’s Intro to Dance Technique: Modern and Tap or Ms. Molly’s Intro to Dance Technique: Tap and Jazz in 2019-2020 are also eligible to take Jazz I.) 4th-6th Grade dancers are expected to have some prior tap experience. 7th-8th Grade dancers new to tap are welcome to take Tap I as well.

Pre-Ballet
Ballet technique will be gently introduced through exercises, dance games and student leadership opportunities as we continue to foster a love of dance. Dancers will learn new movement patterns, explore qualities of nonverbal expression, and organize movement into an aesthetic experience. We will continue using imagery and props to broaden and develop students’ artistry. Throughout the year students will learn and practice the Royal Academy of Ballet technique at the preprimary level. Classes will explore and expand movement possibilities and skills.

Students who took Ms. Sara’s Wed 3:45 Kinder Ballet class in 2019-2020; students entering kindergarten who took Laura or Mauri’s Creative Movement in 2019-2020; and new 1st Grade students interested in ballet should take this class.

The groundwork of ballet is set at the barre where students will learn placement of their feet, bodies, and arms. Combinations will progress to the center where components of balance and coordination are attained.

Ballet II is for 4th-6th Grade dancers (or the equivalent). 7th and 8th Grade dancers new to ballet should take Ballet II (rather than Contemporary/ Ballet Mix).

Contemporary/Ballet Mix
Incorporating elements of classical ballet and modern dance, the influences of the class primarily stem from Limón and Cunningham technique. The structure of the class develops strength, flexibility, fluidity, and musicality. This class promotes an in-depth understanding of alignment, spatial awareness, movement efficiency, and injury prevention. The class teaches classical ballet positions and how those shapes are exaggerated and altered through contemporary forms. Head/tail connection and spinal articulation will be integrated into more traditional foot and leg exercises. Center work will investigate fall and recovery with spatially controlled movements. Then traveling across the floor exercises will be followed by challenging phrase work. Throughout the school year, dancers will learn ballet and contemporary dance history and be offered the opportunity to choreograph short dances during various holiday classes.

Contemporary/ Ballet Mix is for 7th-12th Grade dancers. Students should be expected to have a mature attitude and apply themselves diligently in class.

Creative Movement Ensemble
Students in Creative Movement Ensemble (CME) will learn about dance as an artform through a thematic approach to movement (space, time & energy). Students will be included in Halestone’s fall concert in our studio space (*subject to change due to COVID), and an emphasis will be placed on collaboratively choreographing as a class. Students will be guided to create a dance piece as an ensemble. They will be empowered to use their newfound knowledge of space, time and energy to create their own choreography and to work in groups to create the dance piece.

Creative Movement Ensemble is open to dancers in kindergarten through 4th grade. Creative Movement Ensemble is also a new experiment to meet certain needs! It’s a pilot program for us. Halestone received grant funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts to offer transportation to our studio for this class.
Because of safety concerns and shifted schedules due to COVID-19, Creative Movement Ensemble (1:30) will have transportation offered from Waddell Elementary to Halestone. Pick up will be at 2:30 pm at Halestone Dance Studio.

Creative Movement Ensemble (3:30) will have roundtrip transportation offered from Natural Bridge Elementary to Halestone. Pickup is in front of Natural Bridge Elementary between 4:45 and 5:00 pm.
For fall 2020 each class is capped at 6 students. We will reevaluate this enrollment cap in January 2020. Students from any elementary school can register for either class, however they must arrange their own transportation to Halestone.

Because CME has an emphasis on performing, 3rd and 4th grade dancers enrolling in CME are encouraged to take an additional class per week – either ballet, modern, tap or jazz to work on the development of their technique. Older CME students will be empowered to be mentors to younger CME students.
