Welcome to the Dance Teacher Assistant Program! All assistants must complete this asynchronous online course prior to becoming a dance teacher assistant. After you finish this course, we will have you complete 4 classes of in-studio training. You can schedule the days/times that you are available to assist by emailing us with your preferences. The dance prop bag will be used in all of the Mini Movers, Baby Dance, On My Own, Fundamentals, and Elements level classes. If you have one from a previous season with us, you do NOT need to purchase another.

In Tap Fundamentals, the dancers will begin to learn basic tap dance steps, to fun upbeat & kid-friendly music. They will work on transferring weight, traveling around while making rhythms, and identifying their right and left. The dancers will learn to put these skills together into sequences and patterns, through short routines and choreography combos. This class uses imaginative concepts and movement games to increase learning.

They will be challenged with longer and more intricate sequences of steps and they will work on timing, holding the downbeat, and musicality.

The dancers work on proper ballet posture, and on increasing strength and flexibility. They will be asked to remember the definitions for ballet vocabulary and will learn how to identify different steps, turns, and jumps.

They will use repetition, concepts like “three-and-a-break”, and reversing a combination to broaden their understanding of the mechanics and musicality needed to be “in the pocket” of the rhythm. Once they are able to execute timesteps and all foundational tap steps clearly and at different speeds, they will begin to learn tap tricks that they are developmentally ready for. The dancers will be encouraged to create their own rhythms and steps, through the use of tap games.

In Ballet Accelerations, the dancers will work on gaining a greater understanding of the technique needed to properly execute their ballet steps, through clarity of shape and line, turn-out, epaulment, and body control. The class will have a large focus on understanding the “how and why” behind ballet technique, and how certain steps are the basis of many more. They will work on executing multiple clean turns and intricate jumps and leaps. Dancers will work on the strength needed, specifically in their feet, ankles, and legs, to progress towards being ready to go en pointe.

Ballet Elements
In Ballet Elements, the dancers will be introduced to the more formal structure of ballet class. They will begin to work on ballet skills at the barre, and flexibility, strength, balance, and control. They will learn the French words for many ballet terms. They will link their steps together into memory-building combinations and routines, and will continue to use imaginative imagery and games to push their learning forward.

In Tap Fundamentals, the dancers will begin to learn basic tap dance steps, to fun upbeat & kid-friendly music. They will work understanding how each part of their tap shoe makes distinct and different sounds, and they will work on different rhythmic patterns and tempos. They will work on transferring weight, traveling around while making rhythms, and identifying their right and left. The dancers will learn to put these skills together into sequences and patterns, through short routines and choreography combos. This class uses imaginative concepts and movement games to increase learning.

In Jazz Fundamentals, the dancers will begin to learn basic jazz dance steps, to fun upbeat & kid-friendly music. They will work on movement that shifts weight, uses sharp energy, isolates individual body parts, as well as large motor skills like jumping, hopping, and skipping. The dancers will learn to put these skills together into sequences and patterns, through short routines and choreography combos. This class uses imaginative concepts and movement games to increase learning.

They will work on more intricate steps as well as the difference between even and swing rhythms, with a focus on musicality. The dancers will learn to put these skills together into sequences and patterns, through short routines and choreography combos. They will continue to use imaginative concepts and games to increase learning.

Ballet Explorations
In Ballet Explorations, the dancers will refine their ballet technique and work on increasing stamina, strength, and grace in all of their combinations and choreography. The class will cycle through barre work, center work, and across-the-floor combinations, using repetition to build muscle memory and recall of steps. The dancers work on proper ballet posture, and on increasing strength and flexibility. They will be asked to remember the definitions for ballet vocabulary and will learn how to identify different steps, turns, and jumps.

They will be challenged with longer and more intricate sequences of steps and they will work on timing, holding the downbeat, and musicality.

In Jazz/Contemporary Explorations, the dancers will work on leveling-up all of the skills they already know, through clarity of shape and line, and control. They will broaden their understanding of the mechanics of the technique needed to execute clean turns, jumps and leaps and they will learn new and more difficult steps as they are developmentally ready. The class will include warm-ups, stretching, strength-building, center work, traveling combinations, and choreography. They will start to work on incorporating the nuanced and modern-based movement inherent in contemporary dance.

Ballet Accelerations
In Ballet Accelerations, the dancers will work on gaining a greater understanding of the technique needed to properly execute their ballet steps, through clarity of shape and line, turn-out, epaulment, and body control. The class will have a large focus on understanding the “how and why” behind ballet technique, and how certain steps are the basis of many more. They will work on executing multiple clean turns and intricate jumps and leaps. Dancers will work on the strength needed, specifically in their feet, ankles, and legs, to progress towards being ready to go en pointe.
