Youth & Adult Silk Road Style Group Improvisational and Fusion Bellydance Foundations
YOUTH & ADULT SILK ROAD STYLE GROUP IMPROVISATIONAL AND FUSION BELLYDANCE FOUNDATIONS: Ages 16+
Group Improvisation is a style of Bellydance that uses a common vocabulary of movements and non-verbal, body language cues by a leader to create a unique dance every time. Inspired by foundational folkloric dance styles of the Middle East, North Africa, Spain and India, this style encourages a supportive group environment and there are no choreographies to memorize. Fusion Bellydance was born from the western evolution of Middle Eastern dance. It takes elements of Group Improvisation and pairs it with other styles of dance, including (but not limited to) Hip Hop, Flamenco, classical Indian, and Bollywood. What you get is a unique style that is rooted in traditional Middle Eastern Dance with a modern twist that is open to a world of possibilities.

Repertoire
OPEN BALLET V-VI and REPERTOIRE:  Ages 14+
Repertoire offers dancers the opportunity to develop personal artistry and performance quality beyond technique, in a class focused on interpretation and presentation  of the classical canon.  Repertoire offers intermediate, advanced and adult students the opportunity to learn iconic choreography from the ballet canon.  Repertoire students will study corps de ballet formations, and soloist/principal variations from ballets such as Swan Lake, Giselle, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, The Four Temperaments, Serenade, La Esmeralda, La Bayadère, and more. Repertoire students acquire excellent first-hand knowledge of the styles of ballet’s leading schools and choreographers, as well as repertoire for performance, auditions and post-secondary study.  Students are introduced to concepts regarding professional production, including lighting, sound, staging, props, human resources, sustainability, costuming and cultural sensitivity.  Highlights include creating effective communication and storytelling, understanding historical progressions and context, exploring  choreographic intent, finding artistic freedom through individual expression, developing holistic acting and performance strategies, and melding technical clarity and artistry as intrinsic aspects of dance expression.  Rather than conformity to traditions, the aspiration is to introduce and secure the knowledge and experience of fundamental precepts in each piece, in tandem with enhancing each dancer’s own interpretations, and respect for the dignity of their unique and irreplaceable capacity for authentic expression. Enrolment in Repertoire is by permission of the instructor only, and limited to students in Levels V, VI and Adult Ballet, taking a minimum of two weekly ballet technique classes, and former (pre)professional dancers. Students enrolled in Pointe II/II may take Repertoire en pointe with instructor permission . Repertoire is not a technical training class. While Repertoire is complementary and supplemental to technique classes, it is not offered in lieu. Choreography learned will be at the discretion of the instructor, in accordance with what is safe and appropriate for the dancers' age and technical level.

Youth & Adult Spanish Classical and Flamenco
YOUTH AND ADULT SPANISH CLASSICAL AND FLAMENCO: Ages 13+
Youth and Adult Flamenco builds upon the Spanish dance foundations introduced in Spanish Classical to allow dancers a deeper technical and artistic exploration of the different palos (families) of flamenco. Flamenco is a genre of music, song, and dance that evolved in Spain, particularly, but not exclusively, in Andalucía in southern Spain. It is a cultural crossroads of great diversity, strongly influenced by the migration of the Roma from India to Spain. It encompasses influences from Kathak/Indian, Roma, Middle Eastern, North African, Celtic, Mediterranean, Latin and Central American, and Iberian cultures. Rooted in organic movement, the dance form interprets flamenco’s many rhythms and styles through the use of palmas (hand clapping rhythms), zapateado (percussive footwork), filigrana (graceful arm and hand movements) and marcaje (danced steps). Dancers will also also explore the use of castanuelas (castanets), abanicos (fans), cajon (flamenco drum), mantones (large shawls), bastón (cane) and/or the bata de cola (dress with a long train). Flamenco’s immense malleability, spanning from simple to complex movements and gestures, is conducive to authentic expression for dancers of all levels of experience. Flamenco interprets all facets of human emotionality, the situations eliciting these emotional responses, and the human condition, as both subjective and objective experiences. Flamenco’s aspiration and its essence, which makes it remarkably inclusive, is sincerity. Dancers with different experience levels will be given progressions and variations suitable to their needs. PREREQUISITE: Spanish Classical
