Late Spring 2024 Open Level Pilates Mat Technique
Looking good and feeling good are more connected to alignment than you realize. We call our classical Pilates mat classes "technique" classes because it isn't really what you do that makes the change--it's how you do it. Pilates teaches your body to work for itself rather than against itself, which is why it's the perfect salve for tired, aching bodies and the perfect complement to any training regime. By systematically stretching and strengthening your body as an integrated whole, challenging core “powerhouse” muscles, and rewiring faulty mechanics, you'll restore alignment, streamline your musculature, and work out muscular imbalances that otherwise lead to aches and pains.

They begin to incorporate epaulement, or the positioning of the upper body in addition to the positioning of the hips, legs, and feet, and gain a real understanding of the lines that define the art form.

Contemporary Modern Dance Beg Int (ages 10+)
Rooted in ballet and modern techniques, our contemporary dance class gives students the knowledge and physical awareness needed to accomplish the beauty of contemporary modern dance. Students perfect lines and curves as they learn how to free their movement in pursuit of stunning moving pictures. Compliment to the Ballet II level, but can be taken on its own as well.

Ballet I (ages 8+)
Ballet is graceful lines, thoughtful movement, and live piano accompaniment in classes. In classical ballet classes, students build on the foundation they've established in pre-ballet. They have better command of their turn-out, allowing their body to work comfortably and properly in 3rd, 4th, & 5th positions of the feet. This also enables them to develop greater flexibility and tackle more intricate steps like rond de jambe, country pas de basque, and pas de chat. They begin to incorporate epaulement, or the positioning of the upper body in addition to the positioning of the hips, legs, and feet, and gain a real understanding of the lines that define the art form.
Ballet I--One 1hr technique class/wk required, two recommended.

Dress Code: Black leotard (no attached skirt), pink tights, pink ballet slippers, hair pulled back neatly in a ballet bun

Advanced Theater Jazz (age 11+)
Theater Dance is the study of music through movement. In theater, dancers must have full command of jazz, ballet, and modern techniques in order to achieve the sophisticated styling required to portray any given character. Theater Dance at ALDEN MOVES gives students the opportunity to build on their fundamentals in an arena outside of a classical ballet class. Students get an introduction to Luigi technique and style while working musicality, weight shifts, and direction changes through weekly "combinations." Students in Theater Dance should be enrolled in 1-2 classes per week.

Summer Camps 2024

Name
Days
Location
(Week 1 of 2) Broadway Bound (7-12 yr olds)
Aspiring "Triple Threats" will live the dream in daily dancing, singing, and acting classes in these one-week (4-8yr olds) and two-week (7-12yr olds) intensive workshops. Each new year of Broadway Bound camps features a new theme. This year, we'll be "looking back as dance moves forward," exploring musical theater stylings from the 1920's to today during film study and through choreography. Daily jazz classes will help dancers finesse technique while challenging them to convey character though choreography as well. They will make their own costumes, props, and sets in preparation for a virtual end-of-camp showcase for parents.

Company B Intensive
Summer dance immersions are a wonderful precursor to the full blown dance intensives dancers age 10+ are ready for as they continue to progress in their technique. Intensives are for experienced dancers, Level Ballet II +, only. They involve a daily ballet class, longer technique classes in general (1-1.5hrs classes vs 45min-1hr immersion classes), and a 2nd morning technique class in either modern or jazz styles. Afternoon enrichment classes will include a mix of hip hop, dance composition, Pilates, pointe, improvisation, and rehearsal for an outdoor fall performance like Flatbush Frolic rather than an end-of week showcase. The additional class time gives us an even greater ability to work on advancing steps/vocabulary and help dancers who have had significant time off during the summer to regain lost ground before we get back to fall classes (which allows fall classes to progress more quickly!).
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday
9:00 AM to 2:30 PM
Studio 1203
Dance Explorers (4-8 yr olds)
Dive into dance with a week-long immersion that explores a different style each day. We'll delve into Ballet, Creative Movement & Improvisation, Modern, Musical Theater, and Hip Hop through daily classes and choreography. We'll also be "looking back as dance moves forward" through film (this year's overarching camp theme) and making our own costumes, props, and sets, for an end-of-week virtual showcase for parents. Students will be divided into age and level-appropriate groups whenever applicable.

Rhythm & Moves (4-8 yr olds)
Delve into Hip Hop style and explore a spectrum of movement in one of our most exciting week-long camps returning this year. This camp features daily Hip Hop classes peppered with a few more classical dance fundamentals for building added strength and balance. The overarching theme for camps this summer is "looking back as dance moves forward," and during Rhythm & Moves, dancers will explore hip hop origins as well as trends today through film and choreography. Dance composition activities will encourage personal expression while also challenging dancers to discover new ways to move and dynamics to move with. We'll also make our own costumes, props, and sets in preparation for a virtual end-of-week showcase for parents!

Upstate Company B Intensive
Join ALDEN MOVES faculty for a weeklong dance intensive upstate in Accord, NY that includes opportunities for dancers to develop site specific improvisions and choreography at Minnewaska State Park and Art Omi.

Parents will drop dancers off at our Brooklyn studio on Monday, Aug 19 and pick dancers up from our Brooklyn studio on Saturday, Apr 24. On Monday, we'll kick off the week with a ballet class at the studio before packing dancers up and heading upstate.

Dancers will have 2 full days of dancing in the barn on our upstate campus and 2 days with a morning technique class followed by a trip for off-site improvisation and choreography.

On barn days, morning modern and jazz technique classes will be followed by dance composition workshops, improvisation, rehearsal, and Pilates or yoga when not dancing outdoors. Hot afternoons may allow for a couple trips to Rosendale pool to cool off, and evenings will include dance-based films/film study, free time, theme-based dance parties, and student-lead rehearsals, depending on what dancers are most interested in.

The registration fee is inclusive of accommodations, transportation, nutritious meals, and all classes and activities for the week. Students should bring their own sheets, pillows, towels, toiletries, mud/hiking shoes, and a mix of dance, swim, and play clothes. An information session will be held on over Zoom on Thursday, Apr 18th at 7:35pm.
