This class provides an introduction to tap for our youngest students. Dancers will learn introductory tap steps, whole body balance and coordination, and learning to isolate toes and heels. Concurrent enrollment in M&M or Foundations is highly recommended.

WHAT: Dancers will learn and practice introductory tap steps such as shuffles, flaps, ball changes, marching, and walking toe-heel and heel-toe patterns. Rhythm patterns will be echoed and explored with multiple levels of body percussion. Using kid-friendly music, students will experience short choreography sequences.

Students in this class will strengthen and sharpen their music and movement skills with focus and intentionality.

WHO: Typically around age 6. Placement in this class is by teacher recommendation only. Children are well suited for this class when they can demonstrate competence in the music and movement skills taught in M&M. Children have the most success in this class when they are confident in their right vs. left, demonstrate cross lateral ability, can snap their fingers, are eager to concentrate, listen to and follow directions.
WHAT: Half of class time will use Progressing Ballet Technique curriculum to develop three concepts which are vital to all styles of dance: 1. Core stability 2. Weight placement 3. Alignment. Introductory ballet positions and steps will also be learned. Using Orff and Eurythmics methodologies, the other half of class time will focus on connecting body movements to music. Games from various cultures will also be utilized.
WEAR: activewear; bare feet are best; traditional dance attire is allowed but not encouraged.

Using research-backed practices, boys and girls alike will build motor skills, musical skills, and self-awareness in a positive, encouraging environment.

WHO: Ages 3-6 years. Children are well suited for this class if they are comfortable being in a new environment with new people; however transitional nerves are to be expected. Caregivers are expected to be in the building during class should bathroom or emotional assistance be needed.

Miriam Ministry is a dance ministry and Bible study for dancers that would like to serve and minister in the community through the gift of dance. Progressing Ballet Technique

Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) is an innovative dance conditioning program developed by Marie Walton-Mahon for students to understand the depth of training muscle memory and the understanding of core stability, weight placement, and alignment. It is difficult for students to feel what muscles initiate the correct alignment in dance training, however, PBT gives the students a sense of posture and weight placement whilst feeling each correct muscle group. Each exercise has been developed with care and guidance from a team of physiotherapists.

Students will need to have the following items for class: an appropriately sized Exercise Ball and a (AKA: Swiss Ball or Fit Ball), Fusion Ball (AKA: Soft Stability Ball or Pilates Soft Ball)

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE: For dancers with 1 to 3 years of dance training who are interested in placement in the Pre-Professional Program at Black Swamp Fine Arts School.

WHAT TO EXPECT: For many of the students this may be their first or second audition experience. With our goal of being a positive and encouraging learning environment, the placement class will be a low pressure! The students will be guided through class by Miss Elyn while the faculty team will be able to assess whether or not that will be a great fit in the program at this time. No preparation is required. Students may wear attire that they typically wear for ballet class.
Parents of students that are new to BSFAS are encouraged to remain on the premise in case their student needs additional assurance as this is a new place for them.

Video Audition for Pre-Professional Program

Please submit audition videos by May 1st to dance@blackswampfineartsschool.com. A link to a YouTube video or a google drive work well! Extensions may be granted through communication with the artistic director.

Requirements: The audition video should include ballet barre, center, and across the floor exercises which accurately represent the dancer’s skillset. Maximum length of 20 minutes, please. Combinations at the barre may be filmed on one side, but center and across the floor exercises should show both sides. Students with 1-2 years of pointe work may choose to demonstrate pointe work at the barre. Students with 3+ years of pointe work are highly encouraged to demonstrate pointe work throughout their submission. At submission, please inform the faculty team of any injuries that the dancer may be working through when the video was filmed.
