Ballet and Choreography II at home October start (3rd-5th grade)
Ballet II and III technique classes will be taught as separate levels although they occur at the same time. The classes expand the range of classical ballet steps worked on as well as to emphasize the crucial importance of correct alignment. Students will begin class with a ballet barre, followed by center work including adagio, pirouettes or preparations for pirouettes, and allegro sections. These classes will help students utilize different ballet steps in combinations, while focusing on musicality and movement quality, and while allowing beginners to participate. With the assistance of Zoom technology, we can offer an individuated curriculum by using breakout rooms and placing students in groups as needed to work on technical skills or choreography projects. At this age, students can begin to choreograph dances with more sophisticated components, including canons, spatial design, exits and entrances, and counterpoint. We will make sure that students have time to connect with one another and share their work, as we know this is an important part of virtual instruction to find a warm and nurturing connection.

Modern/Contemporary and Choreography II at home OCTOBER start (3rd-5th grade)
Contemporary II and III technique classes will be taught as separate levels although they occur at the same time. Based in traditional modern dance techniques, the classes will allow for creativity as students learn skills as young choreographers. A strong ballet element is included, as the contemporary dance styles have a classical base. Utilizing Zoom's breakout room technology, students will be placed into groups after their technique classes. We will offer exciting workshops for each group – sometimes grouped by age and sometimes by choice. This allows flexibility in our choreography groups as we seek to match students with others with whom they work well. At this age, students are able to compose using more advanced choreographic tools such as: counterpoint, theme and variation, canons, spatial and stage design, as well as to begin to add a deeper understanding of how the dances link to music. The groups and discussion create a warm sense of community, much like our live classes, with a multi-age approach that encourages both challenges and support. We plan to bring experiences in Hip Hop and Jazz to this group as well, as guest teachers will be rotating in.
