Monday Intro to Ballet and Choreography (suggested age: 4-5)
LJD's creative approach to early childhood dance education allows children to experience a joyous exploration of movement! Our classes are structured so that every young dancer feels confident and happy as they dance. Each class includes the basic positions and steps of early ballet technique while the pre-choreography portion of the class encourages a growing awareness of the use of shapes and levels as expressive tools. All elements are presented in an imaginative way with age appropriate images, games and songs. Our environment is always warm and supportive.

The 6th -8th graders are given more advanced versions of the exercises and are grouped together both in the technique and choreography sections of the class. As unusual as it may sound, we have found that our dance students thrive and grow in this kind of multi-age setting. The choreography component expands their understanding of choreographic elements. At this age students are able to compose using more advanced choreographic tools such as: counterpoint, theme and variation, canons, spatial and stage design as well as to begin to add a deeper understanding of how the dances link to music.

For example older dancers will do a complex version of a combination while younger dancers practice a less complicated one. We use appropriate music and movements that are child and teen centered. Hip Hop is quite a complex style with many separate motions of the upper and lower body combining to create its unique effects. The class is uplifting and includes core strengthening exercises as well as balance, turning and other components of all dance techniques. Aglaya Charis has taught Hip Hop in The Netherlands for ACAG Dance Company as well as for New York Parks and Recreation, The Bridge for Dance and in numerous special workshops.
