Each class includes the basic positions and steps of early ballet technique while the pre-choreography portion of the class encourages a growing awareness of the use of shapes and levels as expressive tools. The 6th -8th graders are given more advanced versions of the exercises and are grouped together both in the technique and choreography sections of the class. As unusual as it may sound, we have found that our dance students thrive and grow in this kind of multi-age setting. The choreography component expands their understanding of choreographic elements. At this age students are able to compose using more advanced choreographic tools such as: counterpoint, theme and variation, canons, spatial and stage design as well as to begin to add a deeper understanding of how the dances link to music.
