Lyrical is a beautiful and fluid dance form that combines the techniques of jazz, contemporary and ballet. Lyrical allows dancers to use their bodies to interpret the music and teaches grace, control and flow of movement. Routines are expressive and often choreographed to reflect the lyrics and tell a story. Not only will you be able to strengthen your current skills but you might even add a few skills to your repertoire, plus, it's a whole lot of fun!

Lady Velvet Cabaret and The WA Performance School presents... Modern Bellydance Five Week Course! Join us over five weeks as we delve into the sensual and hypnotic art of Bellydance! Share tips and learn tricks for the perfect vintage hair and makeup, with help from Sugar, a professional plus size stylist and one of Perth’s favourite pinup girls. Sugar will also provide guidance for posing and working in front of the camera with pinup specialist Wild Kat Photography! It will build your child’s self-esteem and help to nurture and support their creative capabilities. The Advanced Singing Troupe performs at public events as well as televised appearances and festivals. A broad range of vocal repertoire is covered in class, along with targeted technical exercises, part work, solfa, aural practise, and more. As seen often on TV show “So You Think You Can Dance”, it is one of the more popular forms of modern dance. Contemporary choreography usually tells a story or portrays a theme and teaches dancers to express emotions and feelings behind their performances. This style is a great accompaniment to ballet dancers as it teaches dancers how to use ballet techniques to extract meaning from dances.

Begin your performing arts journey with WAPS Singing & Drama classes! Taught in our music studio, these classes teach the foundations of performance etiquette, incorporating musical and theatrical activities in a fun-filled class where kids have fun while they learn. Learn how to take care of your voice, and develop your intonation, pitch, rhythm, aural skills and music reading, all while learning fun repertoire to suit young age groups. Students participate in a range of activities and theatrical games to help build confidence, teamwork, vocal projection, characterisation and stage presence, combining their skills to produce fun and musical routines which they perform with flair and pizzazz! This course also covers music theory including aural training inspired by the well-respected Kodaly musical education philosophy. This includes solfa, hand signs, intervals, scales, canons, music reading, rhythm, melodic and rhythmic dictation, and basic elements of conducting, improvisation, composition, and more – you’ll be amazed by what your young child can achieve! This course helps build excellent performing arts foundations for students to build on as they grow.

As one of the few dance schools in Perth offering high-level cheerleading classes (with professional performance opportunities) this class is unique, fun and exciting. You’ll learn various dance sequences, acrobatic tricks, chants and cheers with opportunity to perform at real games. This class not only trains you technically so you become a better dancer, but it also helps improve fitness levels, flexibility, core stability and teaches students the importance of teamwork. It is also highly recommended that all students enrolling into Cheerleading also enrol into an Acrobatics class. WAPS has provided professional cheerleading squad services to various sporting teams in WA, including the West Coast Waves basketball team, West Coast Fever netball team, and Perth Heat baseball team. Depending on seasons and contracts, your child may be given the (optional) opportunity to participate in sports games, which will involve external performances and costume costs.

Mats will be used in class to support all students. Depending on the age group, students will learn everything from Russian splits, back walkovers, round-offs and handstands; to hand springs, braunies, cartwheels, forward rolls, tucks and flips. Not only will you have these impressive tricks to add to your repertoire, but you will also learn to put them into spectacular routines! This class is guaranteed to be fun, exciting and challenging and is highly recommended for all dancers, especially those students looking to enrol into Cheerleading. Enthusiastic advanced-level students can also try out for our Acro Troupes! It is recommended that all new acrobatics students aged 10yrs+ should enrol into Intermediate Acrobatics first (even if they have prior training). Students will be assessed in their first class and advised if they are eligible to move up to the Senior class.

As one of the few dance schools in Perth offering high-level cheerleading classes (with professional performance opportunities) this class is unique, fun and exciting. You’ll learn various dance sequences, acrobatic tricks, chants and cheers with opportunity to perform at real games. This class not only trains you technically so you become a better dancer, but it also helps improve fitness levels, flexibility, core stability and teaches students the importance of teamwork. It is also highly recommended that all students enrolling into Cheerleading also enrol into an Acrobatics class. WAPS has provided professional cheerleading squad services to various sporting teams in WA, including the West Coast Waves basketball team, West Coast Fever netball team, and Perth Heat baseball team. Depending on seasons and contracts, your child may be given the (optional) opportunity to participate in sports games, which will involve external performances and costume costs.

Acrobatics (commonly referred to as “Acro”) is the spectacular art of tumbling, contortion and balance. Acrobatics Classes (whether intermediate or senior) will involve an extensive warm up followed by a series of exercises to improve strength, flexibility, balance, control and agility. Mats will be used in class to support all students. Depending on the age group, students will learn everything from Russian splits, back walkovers, round-offs and handstands; to hand springs, braunies, cartwheels, forward rolls, tucks and flips. Not only will you have these impressive tricks to add to your repertoire, but you will also learn to put them into spectacular routines! This class is guaranteed to be fun, exciting and challenging and is highly recommended for all dancers, especially those students looking to enrol into Cheerleading. Enthusiastic advanced-level students can also try out for our Acro Troupes! It is recommended that all new acrobatics students aged 10yrs+ should enrol into Intermediate Acrobatics first (even if they have prior training). In this class you will be taught stylish and sexy choreography inspired by famous cabaret venues from all over the world. This class delves into both the old and the new, with classic moves from famous musicals (such as the incredible Bob Fosse pieces from Cabaret and All That Jazz), as well as venturing into modern styles made famous by more recent Hollywood productions such as Chicago and Burlesque. Students in this class will be given the opportunity (entirely optional) to perform their routines in a real life cabaret show with Lady Velvet Cabaret at the end of each term, so you too will experience what it truly feels like to be a Burlesque Star! The WAPS DanceAcrobatics class is a specialist course, teaching beautiful dance choreography that includes some of the incredible tricks and techniques of Acrobatics. Discover how to safely perform Acrobatics techniques as part of striking dance routines, giving you the chance to showcase flexibility, strength and balance, as well as dance technique. You will be amazed at what you can achieve with regular lessons and practise, and at creative and impressive ways that Acro techniques can be used to embellish dance choreography. This is an open ability class – we encourage everyone to try it, regardless of your previous experience in dance or acrobatics. Your instructor will take you through technique and choreography at your own pace and students will work at their own level, monitored by staff, to ensure everyone can achieve their goals no matter what your level is!

The Advanced Singing Troupe performs at public events as well as televised appearances and festivals. It is also highly recommended that all students enrolling into Cheerleading also enrol into an Acrobatics class. WAPS has provided professional cheerleading squad services to various sporting teams in WA, including the West Coast Waves basketball team, West Coast Fever netball team, and Perth Heat baseball team. Depending on seasons and contracts, your child may be given the (optional) opportunity to participate in sports games, which will involve external performances and costume costs.

This class is guaranteed to be fun, exciting and challenging and is highly recommended for all dancers, especially those students looking to enrol into Cheerleading. Enthusiastic advanced-level students can also try out for our Acro Troupes! It is recommended that all new acrobatics students aged 10yrs+ should enrol into Intermediate Acrobatics first (even if they have prior training). Ballet is an essential part of any dancer’s training and brings additional grace, strength, technique and poise to a dancer’s presentation. This class involves warm up, stretching, barre and center work. Classes follow the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Syllabus, and students will be given the option to undergo in-house examinations in their respective grades. RAD is one of the world’s most influential dance education and training programs. In this class, students will also develop skills and strength for Pointe work.

Studying drama & acting is a great way of developing self-confidence, spatial awareness and voice projection, especially from a young age. In this class you will learn skills such as improvisation, role-play, characterisation and voice work, as well as giving students skills and real-world experience in voice acting, presentation, projection, and more. It will build your child’s self-esteem and help to nurture and support their creative capabilities. Students will be given opportunities to participate in stage plays and productions as well as potential voice or filmed performances, and may choose to audition for roles as presenters on our WAPSTV YouTube Channel.

Life is a Cabaret! So bring out your inner Christina and join us in the spotlight! Teaming up with WA’s top professional cabaret dance and performance troupe, Lady Velvet Cabaret, we bring to you the ultimate modern burlesque course to show you just how the pros do it. In this class you will be taught stylish and sexy choreography inspired by famous cabaret venues from all over the world. This class delves into both the old and the new, with classic moves from famous musicals (such as the incredible Bob Fosse pieces from Cabaret and All That Jazz), as well as venturing into modern styles made famous by more recent Hollywood productions such as Chicago and Burlesque. Students in this class will be given the opportunity (entirely optional) to perform their routines in a real life cabaret show with Lady Velvet Cabaret at the end of each term, so you too will experience what it truly feels like to be a Burlesque Star! Our Advanced Cabaret students may also be given extra performance opportunities throughout the year at events, live shows and festivals.

There is more to burlesque than the saucy vintage tease – explore more of the elements that make good performers GREAT with our ever-changing selection of short courses! These six week courses are a great option for beginners or for more established performers looking to set themselves apart. Students have the unique opportunity to work with Miss Burlesque Western Australia 2016 Sugar du Joure in an energetic and intimate learning space. The courses cover choreography as well as characterisation, dancing with props, costume construction, development of your stage name and character, as well as the chance to perform at a real cabaret show (completely optional). Contemporary dance is a great accompaniment to ballet classes, teaching dancers how to use classical technique to extract meaning from routines. This Advanced class is suitable for dancers with at least 2yrs or more experience in Contemporary or similar dance styles.

This is an OPEN class, so students of all levels are welcome. Both vocal and dance training will be included in the course, however choreography will be tailored to suit each student’s strengths. You will be amazed at what you can achieve with regular lessons and practise, and at creative and impressive ways that Acro techniques can be used to embellish dance choreography. This is an open ability class – we encourage everyone to try it, regardless of your previous experience in dance or acrobatics. Your instructor will take you through technique and choreography at your own pace and students will work at their own level, monitored by staff, to ensure everyone can achieve their goals no matter what your level is!
