Tap has always been a true staple at The Somerset School of Dancing. We follow the ISTD syllabus with training focused on understanding of core techniques and accuracy, purpose and development of movements. Jazz has always been a predominant genre offered at SSoD. A stylized and technical form of dance that is best supported by a ballet foundation. Classes focus on principles of correct placement, line, movement, strength, conditioning, flexibility, leaps, turns, jumps, and choreography.

‘Creative’, ‘challenging’ and ‘inspiring’

Discovering Repertoire is an innovative new concept in training and assessment from the RAD.
Suitable for students from ages 12 through to adult, the program caters for those with some prior ballet experience (1–2 years of study), through to those of a more advanced standard (upper grades/vocational grades). Students will learn and dance choreography that they have seen on the stage, set to music that they know and love.
The programme is based on modular assessment, to enable students to learn at their own pace.
Students have the option of taking regulated examinations recognized at 3 levels on the UK qualifications framework.

Molded to touch on all aspects for dance/movement and performance, the students have honed the class into a versatile, creative and spirited hour, learning techniques in basic dance, song and performance.

This class is suitable for experienced or non-experienced dancers.

The class fuses the fundamentals of classical ballet technique and movement with structured improvisation, challenging dancers to explore quality of movement, texture, musicality, performance, thought and understanding. Whether, this is to Mozart or Marley, students will delve into the nuances of shape, movement, tone, beat and rhythm.

This class is highly recommended for all our students in Ballet Grades 3 & up.

These focused 45-minute classes pull from techniques and disciplines to hone strength and flexibility and increase range of motion. Students will learn how to safely stretch their legs, hips, shoulders, and back while at the same time building muscle control and balance. This class is also suitable for non-dancers.

SSoD have partnered with the talented Michelle Fray (FIT graduate/Fashion Designer), who will instruct students in the fundamentals of sewing and pattern making, working towards a design and development of theatrical stage costumes.
This class is perfect for those students whose creative spark and interest in garment making, paired with the love of eccentric theatre, are merged in an educational but exciting class.
Students will create a piece each term (with one’s personal ability in mind) for any of our SSoD Mini Productions. This will allow them to showcase what they have created while understanding the fundamentals of construction and use in a practical setting. Classes held at MF Design Studio.

‘Para’ouette’ (dance without denial), ⊕ will provide FREE, adaptive dance classes that allow the physically-challenged to experience the joy of dance and empower them to increase their physical, emotional & spiritual well-being, – enhancing & strengthening their mind, body & spirit through dance.

Dance is an art that involves the entire body. A feat of mental and physical strength, the art of dance is traditionally seen as a craft involving people of a specific build, form, and ability. Our Urban dance class combines Hip Hop and Street Dance styles with a targeted approach to choreography and spirited performance. Our more Senior classes incorporate intricate choreography and movement. Improvisation, individual style, personality and yes ‘attitude’ are explored and encouraged. The students will have a chance to practice their flexibility, balance, coordination and performance skills.

Developed especially for boys, this class nurtures their eagerness for exploration of all genres of dance. Our Musical Theatre classes have become a popular ‘breather’ for our students, an impetus and catalyst between our technical dance classes and a performance skill set of self esteem and awareness. Format includes ‘performance’ warm-up, songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance with development and emphasis in our Senior class on further learning performance skills such as story telling via theatrical techniques already learned.
*Jazz shoes are required for class.

Upon registering: Please advise office of any learning difficulties as students will be given scripts in class and on occasion will be read in open setting. If we are aware, we can confidentially appropriate class so as a student will not feel ostracized and respectful of circumstances.

CONDITIONING/FLEXIBILITY
This class is highly recommended for all our students in Ballet Grades 3 & up.

These focused 45-minute classes pull from techniques and disciplines to hone strength and flexibility and increase range of motion. Students will learn how to safely stretch their legs, hips, shoulders, and back while at the same time building muscle control and balance. This class is also suitable for non-dancers.

Theatrical Costume Design Class

CLASS FEE CHARGED SEPARATELY- not part of tiered class term fees. Cost includes all materials for class.

SSoD have partnered with the talented Michelle Fray (FIT graduate/Fashion Designer), who will instruct students in the fundamentals of sewing and pattern making, working towards a design and development of theatrical stage costumes.
This class is perfect for those students whose creative spark and interest in garment making, paired with the love of eccentric theatre, are merged in an educational but exciting class.
Students will create a piece each term (with one’s personal ability in mind) for any of our SSoD Mini Productions. This will allow them to showcase what they have created while understanding the fundamentals of construction and use in a practical setting. Classes held at MF Design Studio.

‘Para’ouette’ (dance without denial), ⊕ will provide FREE, adaptive dance classes that allow the physically-challenged to experience the joy of dance and empower them to increase their physical, emotional & spiritual well-being, – enhancing & strengthening their mind, body & spirit through dance.

Dance is an art that involves the entire body. A feat of mental and physical strength, the art of dance is traditionally seen as a craft involving people of a specific build, form, and ability. But as dance evolves more each day, this narrow view is expanding to include people of all shapes, sizes, and abilities.
