Please read the below list of commonly asked questions and answers as well as other helpful and important information:

ARE MASKS MANDATORY?
Yes, all teachers, staff and dancers are required to wear a mask when in the building.

ARE VIEWING AREAS OPEN?
The studio lobby and viewing areas will be closed until further notice.

ARE YOUR TEACHERS QUALIFIED?
Yes, our teachers are all qualified dance instructors with many years of experience and training. Some are still performing professionals or have had some experience competing and/or performing professionally. Our faculty bios can be viewed on our website at www.yorkdance.com.

WHAT ARE YOUR CLASS SIZES?
Class sizes will be based on COVID-19 health and safety protocols. The number of students allowed in each studio room is based on the size of the room to allow for proper physical distancing. The minimum number of participants needed to run a group class is six. If we do not receive enough interest to offer the class you have registered for, you will have the option to move to a different available class time or upgrade to a semi-private or private class for an additional fee. If a suitable substitute class cannot be found, you will receive a full refund.

HOW LONG IS THE DANCE SEASON AND WHEN DOES IT START?
Our program will be broken into three terms. See dates below:
Term One: September 11 - December 20
Term Two: January 3 - March 21
Term Three: March 22 - June 6

RECREATIONAL DRESS REHEARSAL AND RECITAL DATES: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8 – WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15 INCLUSIVE

Note: The dress rehearsal will act as the last class for students

Students will participate in one dress rehearsal and are given the opportunity to perform twice in our professional shows at year-end with fabulous costumes, lights, music and make-up. The performances are held at the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre in Newmarket and are the highlight of our recreational dancers’ program. We expect all students to attend both shows so the integrity of the performances is not compromised. If your child will not be able to attend, please notify us in term two so that we can make the necessary arrangements in the choreography to ensure all dancers have a positive experience. In the event that we are unable to present a year-end performance due to further closures enforced by government restrictions alternate performance opportunities will be considered.

WHAT IF THE STUDIO IS REQUIRED TO CLOSE DUE TO GOVERNMENT RESTRICTIONS?
In the event that we are required to close and cannot run in-studio classes, we will continue with the same schedule and proceed with online classes through Zoom. Dancers who wish to continue with Zoom classes will receive a 20% discount off of the regular priced in-studio classes. Any credit remaining will be kept on account and can be used for future classes. Dancers who do not wish to continue with Zoom classes and would like to wait for in-studio classes to resume can freeze their account and use any credit balance for future classes. Dancers who wish to withdraw and not continue with either Zoom or in-studio classes will be charged a $60.00 administrative fee (includes non-refundable deposit and processing).

WHAT IF MY CHILD DROPS OUT BEFORE THE END OF THE TERM?
Once a student has been registered for a term, there is no credit for missed classes. Students who withdraw mid-term will be charged a $60.00 administrative fee (includes non-refundable deposit and processing) per course and will be refunded for the balance of the classes they will not be attending.

WHAT IF MY CHILD MISSES A CLASS?
Due to limited class sizes, we will be offering make-up classes based on availability for missed classes due to illness. Please note: January 31, 2022 is the last date to do a make-up class as each class will be working on different choreography for the year-end recital at this time. Should your child miss a class after this time, he/she could attend a Stretch and Strengthen class. Please speak with our administrative staff for further information.

WHAT IS YOUR ATTENDANCE POLICY?
Dance is exercise that involves choreography and requires the students’ commitment to participate in a class on a regular basis. If a student is absent for several classes, not only will their technique fall behind, but he/she will also miss learning the skills and choreography. If your child misses more than three classes in a row, we may request that you book a private lesson with their teacher to learn the choreography he/she has missed. Punctuality is also important as late arrivals are very disruptive for the instructor and students. If your family plans to be away for an extended period due to vacation or other circumstances, please let the office know as soon as possible.

WHAT IF A CLASS IS CANCELLED?
In the event of a severe winter storm, the studio reserves the right to cancel classes for the safety of our students and instructors. Should we choose to cancel classes; a notice will be posted on your Dance Studio Pro Parent Portal, our website and social media sites after 2:00 pm on weekdays and 8:00 am on weekends. If in doubt, please call the office, check your Parent Portal, our website and/or social media sites for confirmation. Refunds will not be given due to winter storm cancellations; however, if we must cancel a class for any other reason, there will be a make-up date scheduled. This class will be re-scheduled prior to the year-end recital and may be on a day other than your child’s regular class day/time. We will try our best to accommodate all students; however, we will not be able to schedule more than one make-up lesson per cancelled class.

WHAT HOLIDAYS DOES THE STUDIO CLOSE FOR?
Our students count on being able to attend their dance classes weekly as they value the importance of maintaining their technical and physical level. We therefore, close the studio only on certain statutory holidays based on the YRDSB calendar dates. See below for details:

Thanksgiving - Saturday, October 9 – Monday, October 11, inclusive
Winter Break - Tuesday, December 21 – Sunday, January 2, inclusive – classes resume Monday, January 3
Family Day - Monday, February 21
Spring Break - Saturday, March 12 – Friday, March 18, inclusive – classes resume Saturday, March 19
Good Friday - Friday, April 15
Easter Sunday - Sunday, April 17
Victoria Day - Saturday, May 21 – Monday, May 23, inclusive – classes resume Tuesday, May 24

DO YOU PROVIDE SUPERVISION OR EXTENDED CARE?
The instructor is responsible for your child for the duration of the class. Once the class is finished, we cannot supervise or provide extended care for students. It is important that you arrive at least five minutes before the end of the class to pick up your child. If this is not possible, we respectfully request that you appoint another parent to pick up your child. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, dancers will need to be picked up immediately after their class.

HOW DO I HEAR ABOUT THINGS GOING ON AROUND THE STUDIO?
We make every effort to ensure that students and their families are aware of all the activities and events planned around the studio. Important dates and class cancellations due to holidays are posted on our website and social media sites. Newsletters are emailed periodically throughout the year. This information can also be found on the bulletin boards at our studios. You can stay up to date by following us on Facebook and Instagram. Should your contact information change, we ask that you update it through your Dance Studio Pro Parent Portal. If you cannot find the information you are looking for, you may also contact us at info@yorkdance.com.

CLASSROOM AND STUDIO ETIQUETTE
Students are to wait quietly in the proper area until they are called into the studio by the instructor. For safety reasons, students should not be in the studio without an instructor present. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, the studio lobby and viewing areas will be closed until further notice. Dancers will need to be picked up at the designated studio entrance immediately after class. Absolutely no outdoor footwear is allowed in the dance studio. Water is allowed in the studios; however, food, other drinks and gum are not permitted. YDA is a peanut/nut free studio so we especially ask that you leave any products that contain or may contain peanuts/nuts at home. We appreciate your consideration in this matter as we have many students with severe food allergies. Students are to eat in the designated area at each location.

RESPECT YOUR PEERS AND TEACHERS
Dance is a discipline and there are certain behaviours that are unacceptable. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a proper and respectful manner while in the studio. Disruptive behaviour may result in disciplinary action up to and including removal from the program. Proper dancer manners are posted around the studios. Please make yourself aware of these.
