3/4 Year Old Class - Tuesday 4:25pm
Jenny Lawrence
This class is full
Our 3/4 Year Old Classes are pre-ballet but at that early age we concentrate on movement literacy skills such as strengthening, stretching, balance, and coordination. We use creativity and imagination to make it a fun experience for children so we can promote correct technique in bright and stress free way for our littlest dancers.
Each class, we will do a warm-up in a circle that's designed to get their muscles warm, gently stretch and strengthen, and engage their brains. We swim like mermaids and mermen to strengthen back muscles, flex and stretch the feet making our toes pop up into the flexed position, and stretch like cats on all fours.
We then proceed to the basics of a ballet barre (still in a circle). We do pliés, tendus, balance on one foot, work on soft arm movement by flapping our "wings," and more. We also learn the core vocabulary for the foundations of ballet.
The third section of the class consists of traveling movement, dancing from one side of the floor to the other. Everything from simple movement like marching to gallops, weaving, moving forward and backwards, jumping with feet together or from two feet to one foot to learn the skills and to begin to understand spatial recognition, and much more.
At the end of class for the last 3-5 minutes, we allow the dancers to "free" dance within a certain set of specifications. We often call this bubble dancing because we put a bubble around ourselves to avoid touching other dancers. The dancers feel like they get to create their own movement, but we give them targeted goals. For example, we might work on levels and call out high, medium, or low and the dancers will move like giraffes, elephants, and turtles. It's the perfect way to give them some freedom while still working on a skill.
Note: There is no dress code for this class. We only ask that your dancer wear clothing in which they can move freely and that does not distract them. Some children will wear a leotard and tights or dance dress, others will wear leggings or shorts and a top. Bare feet or ballet shoes are acceptable. (Please don't send your dancer in footed tights and no ballet shoes -- it is simply too slippery with footed tights and no shoes to maintain good balance.) We do sell dance wear and shoes at the studio at good prices.

Approximate ages 10-12 years old in September 2024. This course can only be taken as an add on to the Garnet Ballet class that immediately precedes it and cannot be taken by itself. Students who are not old enough/strong enough to go on pointe yet can take this class as a strengthener. At the teachers' discretion, some students MIGHT progress to getting pointe shoes the following. If a student wants to be considered to go on pointe in the future, they would need to be a minimum of 11 years old, be taking two ballet classes a week, and have teacher permission. We look for core strength, ankle strength, ability to control turnout, foot stability and more in making this decision, but overall pointe work requires a very conditioned ballet body to avoid injury.
