Technique, pointe work, flexibility and strength are greatly emphasized. Students can expect to spend one to three years at any level to allow for progress. These classes incorporate pointe work. Typically a student is between 10 and 12 years old when she starts pointe, this is at the discretion of the teacher.

Contemporary/Lyrical (ages are a guideline only)
Contemporary & Lyrical dance is a ballet based discipline usually danced bare foot. It focuses on creative self-expression rather than on technical virtuosity. Contemporary/Lyrical dance is a more relaxed, free style of dance, in contrast to ballet's structured code of steps. It has a deliberate use of gravity, whereas ballet strives to appear light and airy.

Performance Contemporary Levels 1-4
Classes are 45-60mins in length. These classes are non-competitive and non-exam classes. Students will learn the elements of modern/contemporary dance.

Adult Tap 19+
Tap is a unique style of dance involving specific and rapid footwork. The dancer's foot and shoe essentially act as a drum, and each part of the shoe makes a particular beat and sound. "Riverdance" is perhaps the most famous tap dance.

This is a fun atmosphere suitable for beginners and experienced dancers

Progressive ballet Technique (PBT)
Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) is an innovative body-conditioning and strengthening program that has been designed to enhance students' technique by focussing on training the muscle memory required in each exercise in all forms of dance. It is a unique training system using ballet-technique specific exercises to train skill acquisition in a graded and progressive manner from junior through to advanced levels. PBT helps teachers around the world prepare their students to receive the strength they need to achieve their personal best.

At HSDA we teach competitive, non-competitive, non-exam and lyrical jazz, as well as following the syllabi of the Association of International Dance Teachers.

Performance Contemporary/Lyrical 1
Contemporary/Lyrical (ages are a guideline only)
Contemporary & Lyrical dance is a ballet based discipline usually danced bare foot. It focuses on creative self-expression rather than on technical virtuosity. Contemporary/Lyrical dance is a more relaxed, free style of dance, in contrast to ballet's structured code of steps. It has a deliberate use of gravity, whereas ballet strives to appear light and airy.

Gr. 1 & 2 Ballet RAD Exam
We follow the method of the internationally recognized Royal Academy of Dance. Students learn the fundamentals of classical ballet, free movement and character. There is also the opportunity for exams and assessments. Ages are a guideline only.

RAD Pre Primary – Grade 2 ballet – ages 6 – 9 (Grades 1-4)
Classes are 45 minutes to 1 hour in duration and students are required to attend two classes a week at their level (once a week for Primary). Students are introduced to the structure of a classical ballet class as well as character dance.
