Intermediate Level Contemporary dance classes are a combined curriculum of modern and lyrical, often utilizing improvisation, floor-work, partnering and performing in bare feet. Contemporary as a dance style in itself is defined, in part, as a fusion of ballet and jazz, demanding technical skill, musicality and an expression of emotion. A solid, ballet-based technique, proper placement and bodily alignment are essential components. Contemporary dance borrows from ballet, jazz, social dances, and many modern dance techniques of the 20th century. Contemporary dance encourages dancers to be versatile in their expressions, being able to portray a wide array of movement styles and emotion. It focuses on spacial and body awareness, use of body weight, floor work, leaps, turns, efficiency of muscle usage, and safe body alignment. MUST have at least 3 years dance experience and be able to learn/follow/execute new choreography combinations quickly.

We will also be offering a one day camp for students to be better prepared, the camp will include: teaching/practicing the tryout routine, going over vocabulary tested at tryouts, and practicing presence, improv, & performance skills. The camp is OPTIONAL, but highly suggested. Come to tryouts PREPARED with the combinations memorized and refresh your vocab/technique skills.

Wear ALL BLACK clothes you can move in, hair slicked back, shoes on, stretched & ready. Information for time slots, parent meeting, and other info on **band**.

There is a non refundable $5 fee for this tryout to help pay for admin/staffing for this event.

Once again, we have huge interest in specialty routine try outs, this means we have to make limits to ensure we don't overfill our competition schedule, choreographers, studio space, & recital load. These limits may be made via solos, duets, or trios. Competition Specialty Routines are meant to be exclusive, and that comes with it's limits & expectations. We love all of the kids, but in order to continue building our specialty program in the right direction, we will keep limitations on routines depending on our below criteria. Having a specialty routine in previous years WILL NOT guarantee having a specialty routine this year and having a performing specialty WILL NOT mean you will receive a competing specialty this year. We will be limiting the amount of soloists, as well as age groups/levels/styles. Specialty routines are special and must be limited to give our best to those that are chosen for them. As well as being special for those who have: Put in the extra effort (time, classes, at home work, goals met), show good sportsmanship and coachability (with teammates, choreographers, and other staff), parental code of conduct (account up to date, showing up on time, not asking for more than their kid has, not gossiping, following through on commitments), skill/style level (with over 50 company members & over 7 different styles, our specialty members should hold above the minimum skills for their age group), etc. Please set your/your child's expectations. Although we won't compete a kid against another kid, they are compared when they are in the same age group, vying for the same slot, it will go to the dancer who best emulates the below criteria. Coaches have paid attention throughout the year and these factors will be taken into consideration going into the new season. BEFORE COMMITTING TO THESE SPECIALTIES, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU MEET THE CRITERIA OF OUR EXPECTATIONS, AS WELL AS THE FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY.
Attendance: 90%+ attendance in all teams, technique, privates, specialty keep up classes (& on time to class). Communication if absences are excused (however, excessive absences still HIGHLY affect them in all aspects and will be heavily taken into consideration).
Sportsmanship/Cooperation: including teammates, choreographers, coaches, parents, events
Work Ethic: took the extra classes/clinics, took privates to reach their goals, worked at home, coachable, took corrections/applied them
Parental Code of Conduct: account up to date, clear & kind communication, no gossiping, coach/parent/other student treatment
Skill/Style Level: has noticeable skills ABOVE their current age/team level's expectation
BACK THIS YEAR!!!! We know what it means to students' growth to have these types of routines, and we want them to have the opportunity to meet their full potential. We saw student commitment, ability to memorize, passion for performing, & performance skills by adding this option in, so it's BACK :) Performance specialties will get up to 4 local performances, picture day in their costume, and the chance to GROW even more.

Some questions we've had, or expect to have:
Routine Max: 5 TOTAL routines (this includes all teams & specialties) *Rise & Rogue: max 6!
Competing solos WILL BE reconfigured this year to match open age groups/levels/styles. We will MOST likely add/remove at least 3 or 4. Please remember that just because you have had a solo in the past, does not guarantee one in the future. Solo counts completely depend on age groups, styles, and the total number of tryouts. Most companies don't take near as many as we do as is. These numbers will change if we need an age or style addition/or too many, or add members to rise, max 15.
Competing duets/trios will have a max. These groupings can change every year. We will take your partner(s) choice into consideration, but will ultimately match you with whom we think is best fit (style, size, look, team, total students), max 15.
Getting a competing specialty in any category does NOT guarantee that same category the next year. Code of conduct policies & above criteria MAY affect your specialty status.
Performance specialties will NOT compete, they also need to know that getting a performance specialty is not a tiered step to getting a competing specialty, it's just an opportunity for our kiddos to experience a specialty routine.
There is no set max of performance specialties, but our choreographers, studio space, performance opportunities, & recital length will be taken into account.
Competing solos are required to be in at least one conditioning class, as well as one keep up/cleaning class. Competing duet/trios: must be in a keep up class or comparable private lesson schedule.
Competing solos will be required to follow a card of specialties or clinics to keep their skills in full force (tba), as well as their cleaning sessions in their dance card.
Fee Schedules did change this year and choreography WILL NOT start without fee being paid in full.
If accounts are behind, their specialty routine will not be able to compete at nationals.
Specialty/Exclusive teams are coach choice. Any coach may choose any student for any style of routine they want to do. These are optional, but are special choice that may be offered to your child. These will be set WELL ahead of team tryouts so that you know your max.
If you are not keeping up with your team expectations, your specialty and/or exclusive team will be benched or put on the back burner BEFORE your main team.
Additional fees set: $50 drop fee if you withdraw your specialty after tryouts (applies to any specialty/exclusive). Performing Specialties: will be given the choice to move forward, if you withdraw from it after decision is made, same fee applies for your coach/choreographer's time.
Decisions are final, we will NOT change our minds. If you don't like your trio/duo group, you are welcome to withdraw from your specialty. We group certain kids, for certain reasons and a lot of discussion goes into the decision. The best learning process for any student comes from working in any group, style, etc.
Students can put their preferred style and type of specialty, but final decisions will be left to the choreographers/director. We will announce placements on MAY 31ST!

Thank you for reading and we CAN'T WAIT to see what you can do!

PLEASE DO NOT SKIP OVER READING THE GOOGLE DOCUMENT, WE WILL NOT ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT IT LATER AND ALL INFORMATION IS VITAL TO KNOWING TO HAVE THE BENEFIT OF A SPECIALTY ROUTINE.
